Robin: Hobson's Choice Affair |
Part 17
April had done her job well- she had returned Alexander Waverly safely back to UNCLE Headquarters, apparently unnoticed.
Now Waverly sat at his desk, already busy reading over the numerous reports and files that required his personal attention. April was working nearby on her own paperwork. Neither looked up when Mark Slate entered Waverly's office.
"Report Mr. Slate."
"It's taken care of Sir. Now if it works...?...we will have our traitor and Illya and Mr. Solo can come in from the cold..so to speak."
"Mark darling, you really must stop reading those cheap spy novels." April told her partner as she gave him one of her lovely smiles..
Waverly nodded to the younger Englishman.
"Very good Mr Slate..But for now we will have to leave it in Mr Kuryakin's hands.. And Mr Solo's hands of course.."
The communcations console occupying a wall in Waverly's office began to wail. Waverly reached for the microphone, his knarled fingers flipping a toggle switch to activate the channel.
"Open channel D."
"Kuryakin here, Sir."
"Yes Mr. Kuryakin. Your report, please."
Illya gave Waverly his full report. It was needless to say that on hearing the dangerous and deadly THRUSH agent, Angelique DuCheine was still alive, Waverly was far from happy.
"That damned woman has more lives than a cat." Mark exclaimed.
Waverly cleared his throat.
"Quite right Mr. Slate." Waverly turned back to the communication console.
"Mr. Kuryakin, what do you intend to do with your prisoner?"
"Use him to find Angelique. I doubt that he can provide any useful information concerning our mole."
"Very good. And I will have Reynolds and Wilmington's bodies retrieved as well as that poor unfortunate girl."
"They were good men, It was just bloody rotten luck they had to run in to that minx Angelique." Mark added.
There was a pause from Illya's end.. It was evident that the Russian had heard.
"Agreed." Illya answered.
"Sir. I will report back later when I/we have something to tell you."
"Excellent, Mr. ah...Kuryakin, but I want you to attempt to call in every 2 hours. Oh yes.... and Mr. Slade has put plan 6W in to motion. The rest is up to you 2 gentleman now. I am sure I do not have to impress upon you Mr. Kuryakin, or you, Mr. Solo to keep your guard up." Waverly told his number one agent and his new 'partner'.
"No Sir.." both men answered together.
"Very good then. Closing channel D."
Waverly switched off the console and slipped his pipe back into the pocket of his gray tweed jacket. He looked at agents Slade and Dancer.
"Now we wait.."
