Bright morning sunlight streamed across the back porch, but Napoleon felt it was far too close to a house full of enemies to stop there. He spied a gazebo, sides open to the air, a short distance away, and carried his burden to it, laying him down on one of the wide seats which ringed the interior, in full sunlight.

'He should wake soon,' Lovecraft said into Napoleon's mind, 'but while I've got you alone, so to speak, there are urgent matters to discuss.'

"Such as?" Napoleon said aloud, as if Lovecraft was a separate entity and couldn't hear his thoughts.

'Your bond must be strengthened before the sun sets, but to do so involves great risk to the both of you.'

"How do we strengthen the bond, and what sort of risks?"

'You must do that which Ariadne, for her own reasons, has not yet done -- physically consummate your union. A fully realized bond will seal the portal for at least the next century, and even a consummation without love on both your parts will thwart them for a generation at least. Therein, however, lies the risk.

'If both of you don't bring love to the consummation of your bond, Illya's soul will be damned to Hell for all eternity for breaking his wedding vows. Hastur the gatekeeper will possess his body and kill you, leaving your own soul Earthbound, as mine is, until the portal is sealed by a bond of love.

'After the sun sets, he will find Ariadne and impregnate her, by force if necessary. The child of that union will, once it is grown, have to locate a suitable partner and attempt to open the portal, as Ariadne is doing now.'

"I can't risk damning Illya to Hell! What happens if the bond isn't consummated by us?"

'It will be consummated by Illya and Ariadne, or rather, Hastur and Ariadne. The resulting pregnancy will last but a fortnight and produce the demon Shub-Niggurath, who will birth itself by clawing its way out of her, killing her and, in the process, opening the portal, releasing Cthulhu. The only good thing about it is the both of you will die with the same hope of Heaven you now possess, but the world will be ruled by demons and darkness. The world's only hope is the two of you, and the peril you must put your souls into. It was too late for anything else the moment Illya and Ariadne were blood-bonded during the wedding.'

"Why couldn't you have warned us before that?"

'There are rules which govern these matters, and I cannot bypass them. Warning you before the wedding would have been a violation, and I might not have been allowed to contact you at all afterward if I had done so.'

Napoleon let out a frustrated sigh and tried to deny what he knew had to be done. Even knowing the risks, he knew what he and Illya would do.

The world, after all, had to be saved, and that was their business, their duty, and their charge in honor.

They would not fail, no matter the cost.

Just as he had firmed his resolve, two events occurred.

One was Illya stirring, moaning and opening his eyes.

The other was his communicator beeping. Waverly was on the other end.

"Mr. Solo! I'm told you're interfering with the Kuryakins' honeymoon. You have one hour to report to me in person at HQ, or I'll be forced to send out a retrieval team, with orders to use whatever force they deem necessary, up to and including termination with extreme prejudice."
