Napoleon glanced at the monitor and turned away. It showed Kowalski, his one time partner, a member of the Lilim, betrayer of all his oaths as a Knight, murderer of his own bondmate, tied to a chair in a cell. The sound was off, to spare Napoleon and Mr. Waverly the cries extracted from their one time friend. If it would not seem childish, Napoleon would have turned off the picture too.
"Mr. Solo, please sit down." Mr. Waverly did not look up from the papers he was reviewing. Every item signed or handled by Sir John had to be reviewed and it was a daunting amount of paperwork, especially as they had no idea when he had been turned.
"Sir, I need to."
"You need to sit down and let our friends do their work." Waverly met Napoleon's eyes. "They cannot do what they need to do if we are present. They will feel our reactions and that would give Kowalski an edge. Besides," and here Waverly smiled evilly, "Valentine has millennia of experience, Mr. Kuryakin has centuries of it and they are very angry with the young man.'
"That's what worries me, sir." Napoleon admitted, sitting at the table. He glanced a file and put it back down. "Even they are not immune to the miasma of evil that surrounds the revealed Lilim. What if they loose control?"
"We must trust that they will not." Waverly answered calmly. He frowned at his second-in-command. "You seem pale, when did you last eat?"
Napoleon shrugged.
Shaking his head at the stubbornness of youth, Waverly called for food to be sent to them. Even with all the disruptions, the efficiency of his personal staff was still intact. The food, and the locked, ice chest for the two vampires appeared within minutes. Waverly nodded to Miss White, noting the two armed enforcement agents that flanked her. There were going to be many changes to U.N.C.L.E. because of this days' revelations.
"Sir?" The hesitant question from the Chief Enforcement Agent brought his head around with a snap. Napoleon was staring at a paper, his eyes wide. "The thing posing as Sir John sent a memo to the island - he told them to expect visitors. Very special ones."
Waverly felt the blood drain from his face as he read the memo.
The island was their stronghold, a place they considered safe, and for
very good reason. The training facilities there were state-of-the-art.
The entire place was holy ground, maintained as such rigorously thanks
to a monastery whose strict order turned their backs to U.N.C.L.E.'s activities
there. And he wondered if the Militant Order the Knights Templar had been
able to withstand the forces Sir John's doppleganger
had sent their way.
"Get me Channel L." He barked into Napoleon's communicator. "Connect me to the Survival School immediately.
"I'm sorry, sir." A young woman's voice came back. "We've been unable to reach the Island for over 72 hours. Sir John told communications that they were playing a special series of games and would be incommunicado for at least another three to four days."
The sheer panic that raced through Waverly's mind was strong enough for even Napoleon to feel. It brought Valentine and Kuryakin racing back from their questioning of Kowalski.
"I know why Death decided to interfere." He whispered to the vampire crouching next to his chair. A cool hand pressed itself to his throat, measuring his rapid heartbeat. A moment later, his ancient friend was pressing a glass to his lips, encouraging him to swallow one of his nitroglycerine pills.
*Do not speak aloud, Alexander.* The words swam through his mind. * Show me where to find the information.*
"The Knights." Waverly tried to speak.
*Shhh.* The gentle brushing of mental fingers against his soul calmed him and he felt his heart calm.
* They are after the Treasure. We must go to the Island.* He let the information slide through the walls around his mind. He saw Valentine's confusion and smiled. *The Templars were not destroyed, merely hidden from their enemies.*
The comprehension on the part of the two vampires was swift. The Prince of the Line actually looked stunned and his heir sank into a chair.
*The Knights of U.N.C.L.E. are also Templars?* Valentine demanded, his horror echoing eerily through the four minds.
*Not usually, we hide the Templars. And there are a few of us are Templars* Napoleon shrugged, the information was not particularly new to him, but he did not understand the reaction of the vampires. *Why?*
*There is a legend that the Catholic Pope joined with the King of France to destroy the Templars because they found the most holy of relics. When the Templars captured the citadel at Acra, they found where the infidels had hidden the true vessels of God.* Illya explained quietly, his mental voice as stunned and awed as his face. *The treasure of the Templars was estimated to be richer than that of Holy Rome. The library of the Templars was rumored to hold the letters Christ wrote to his apostles during his ministry. According to tradition the Chapel relics were guarded by their strongest warriors. But when the stronghold fell to the might of Rome and France and to the betrayal of their brethren by one their staunchest allies, the vaults under the stronghold were bare, the library was empty, and the chapel was gone, not even a single stone left standing. All of Christendom was searched for the Templars and their treasures. Not a single Templar broke under inquisition. Not a single one betrayed his brother monks. And the treasures of the Order of the Templar never were found.*
*We gave them sanctuary.*
The two vampires looked at each other, dismay crossing their faces. *The Lilim want the relics. With them.*
Waverly nodded his understanding. *With the power of the relics in their hands the Lilim would be practically unstoppable. And if that happens, Death will not be the only avatar joining the battle. Armageddon.*
Napoleon stood, "I'll call medical and have someone sent up to stay with Mr. Waverly. Then I'll show you how to get to the Island."
"Pray we cannot step foot on the island, Napoleon." Illya whispered.
Napoleon grimaced. If the two vampires could step onto the island's
premises, the protections the Templars and U.N.C.L.E. had placed there
were gone. And if that was true, the Lilim were already too close
to their goal.
