"Yes Mr. Kuryakin, how may I help you?" The operative
on the other end of the line asked.

"I need an ambulance to meet me at 40th and Westland.
Mr. Solo has been shot. I will fill in the
details later." Illya felt a rush of relief at the sound of the
operative's voice.

"Confirmed, an ambulance will be waiting."

Illya disconnected from headquarters with a sigh and looked at his
friend. "Hang on Napoleon I will get you there in time. I
promise," he muttered.

"You better partner." He barely heard Napoleon's reply.
Despite himself Illya smiled; yes this felt so right. They belonged
together; it was as if he had waited all his life to meet this man.
This person was fast becoming more important to him than even his
own safety. The slight blond shivered at the thought. He had
learned years ago that caring for someone brought only pain. Why
now? Why did I have to meet someone I could really like? The
younger man was so deep in thought that he was unaware that he spoke
the last thought out loud. "I am sorry Napoleon; I think we could
have been friends."

"We are friends. Why are you sorry? What did that guy mean
your assignment?" The last was said as his eyes rolled up and he
passed out. Stepping on the gas pedal Illya flew around the corner
barely missing a car and raced for the waiting ambulance at the end
of the block. Skidding to a halt he jumped out and started towards
the back of the ambulance to be stopped by Mr. Waverly.

"I know it is hard to wait, but let them do their jobs. They are trained
for
this."

"Damn Napoleon don't do this to us! Bag him and get the paddles-
he is flatlining," One of the doctors ordered as the ambulance
doors slammed shut and took off with sirens going.
